Conference Work-Study and Scholarship FAQ

What happens at AATE’s annual conference?
AATE’s annual conference draws together hundreds of theatre artists and educators from all over the country for three days of workshops, forums, speakers and events. Many professional networks make up our diverse membership: Playwrights, Teachers, Youth Theatre Practitioners, and Professional Theatre Artists.

What does a Conference Scholarship entail?
There are three types of scholarships available for the 2008 Conference in Atlanta, GA: Full Scholarships, Work-study Scholarships, and Full-time Internships Options.
Full conference scholarships will include one registration fee for the conference, at least one  night of accommodation in the conference hotel in a dual occupancy room, as well as a ticket to the annual Awards Luncheon.  There are limited numbers of Full scholarships available based on donations to the Conference Scholarship Fund each year.
Work-Study Scholarship Recipients can earn up to a 50% reimbursement of their conference fees by working for the conference staff at a rate of $10/hr.  Tasks may include assisting with registration and other administrative duties.  Schedules will be arranged with the Main Office on an individual basis.
Full time Internship Options*

Who is eligible for the Scholarships?
AATE Conference Scholarships are open to any individual interested in the field of theatre and education. However, priority will be given to full time graduate or undergraduate students studying educational theatre and/or drama/theatre for youth and AATE Members. Applications must be received by the AATE Main Office by May 31, 2008.

What must I do to apply?
Download a scholarship application and send it to the AATE Office by May 31, 2008 or contact Leigh Jansson at the AATE Main Office.

How will AATE select recipients?
Applications will be evaluated by a committee made up of AATE board members and members at large. AATE embraces diversity and encourages inclusion of all races, social classes, ages, genders, religions, sexual orientations, national origins, and abilities.

When can I expect a reply from AATE?
AATE will notify all Scholarship applicants by June 30, 2008. If you do not receive a scholarship but still wish to attend conference, the early registration fee will apply.

Wait! I have more questions!
Please contact Membership Director Talleri McRae (tallerimcrae@hotmail.com) or Director of Operations and Programming, Leigh Jansson (leigh@aate.com) for more information.

CONFERENCE INTERNSHIPS

There are a few Full-time Conference Internships available to scholarship applicants and AATE Office interns. *Scholarship applicants who would like to be considered for internships should indicate their interest on the scholarship application.

This team of individuals will run registration, supervise special events and assist with other aspects of conference programming full-time during the event. Their registration fees will be waived, and additional benefits including some event registration or housing may be available. Interns will be able to attend all-conference events as well as at least one session per day, depending on intern schedules. To apply as an AATE Office intern, please download the description and application on the AATE internship page. Telecommuting options are available for those outside of the Washington, DC area.

OTHER WAYS TO SAVE

AATE offers reduced registration rates for Students, Retired Persons and One-day registrations! If you are enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate courses when registering, or will be enrolled in the Fall and have a schedule or other verification of enrollment, you are eligible for student rates. You must list the school you are or will be attending as your affiliation when registering. Please note that One-day registrants may only register for special events taking place on the day assigned to your registration.

While there are many exciting paid workshops and special events, there is plenty to attend without registering for these events - all keynotes, the Playwrights Slam and Unpublished Play Reading Project, the New Guard and Exhibitor Receptions, many on-site performances and over 100 breakout options are included in your conference registration, so you don't need to spend extra on excursions if your budget is tight.
