Clarifying a Vision

Articulating Values

Letting Go and Taking Hold

Leadership in theatre education requires clarity of vision and an understanding of how one’s position will bring about positive change for the future. Such leadership must be connected to a firm set of values that are reflected in every action taken by the leader. And such a leader must be able to communicate with conviction, establishing an environment that fosters artistic creation and learning in the arts. Established leaders know this, but must learn how to pass it along. Emerging leaders need to discover these concepts and must learn how to take hold of the leadership mantle.

This two-part program is designed specifically to bring established leaders in the field of professional theatre and theatre education together with emerging leaders in the field to create a shared understanding of what is required to move the field forward into the next generation. By joining the leaders of the present with those of the future, AATE aims to ensure a vital and vibrant field of theatre for students, artists, and audiences of tomorrow.

The AATE Leadership Institute is held every other year in February. Attendees are selected by an application process that typically begins in October of the prior calendar year. Past Leadership Institute participants are invited to participate in reunion events and progressive supplements to the initial program.
