Internationally, theatre for young audiences has often been ahead of the times. Multi-cultural casting, contemporary social and political themes and audience interaction have been part of TYA vocabulary since the 1960s.  Likewise, TYA today needs to be receptive to a range of different social and artistic undercurrents. These include the tendency towards a more functional curriculum, the collapse and blurring of traditional art forms, the emergence of the new technologies and the inclusion of new audiences. The governing questions behind this forum are: In what ways is TYA changing under the impact of massive global forces? How is this becoming manifest artistically? Other questions to be interrogated include:

What are the inspirations for tomorrow’s young audiences?

What themes are emerging in TYA?

What are the challenges for original works?

What is the role of today’s playwrights and new audiences?

Is dramaturgy a rising or falling presence in TYA?

What, above all, are the circumstances which encourage quality and excellence in our process?

If you are interested in learning more about theatre for young audiences, come join us for this exciting forum comprised of artists, educators, administrators, and students with an interest in TYA.
