StageWrite ADAPTS: Autism & Drama with Artists, Parents, Teachers, & Students
Chair: Elana L Lagerquist, StageWrite:Building Literacy through Theatre Presenters: Olivia Karaolis, United Cerebral Palsy of Los Angeles
StageWrite’s ADAPTS program engages students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) through integrated theatre residencies with general education students. Our presentation will focus on the research, development, and teaching artist training that made it possible to more equitably serve all types of learners. We will share successes and challenges in piloting this program. Participants will engage with sensory integration activities that support special education classroom learning through creative play. We will also share ways
to build community through educator, artist, parent and student engagement with the theatre arts, thus advocating for equitable treatment of students with autism. Participants will discover how integration projects that engage ALL students through the theatre arts can enhance the entire school community.
