Workshop A: Devising Theatre
Young people today are charged with managing social issues that have impact on them and the community around them.  This workshop will focus on how to use devising theatre technique to encourage students to become change-makers in their own communities.  Participants will leave understanding the importance of allowing space to develop empathy skills, how to integrate this work into their own pedagogy and how to encourage students to have a voice in their communities. 


Workshop B 
Conflict and collaboration are at the heart of effective drama theater presentations. In this follow-up workshop, connect leadership qualities to group dynamics and cooperative learning. Learn how to facilitate creative dramatic strategies (i.e. tableau,improv and role play) to explore the tension and potential between individuals. Participants will learn how to engage student’s imagination to create and demonstrate shared cooperative goals. Supplementyourtool kit for fostering speaking, listening and presentation skills and leave with concrete strategies for your classroom.


 

BIOS:

Irish Brown is a 13-year old eighth grade student at Martin Behrman Charter School. Irish has always had a love for writing because of its ability to transport one to a new world and alleviate stress. At Behrman, Irish is known for her intellectual and athletic abilities. Her favorite subject is Mathematics. Irish is one of the elite eighth graders who were chosen to partake in Algebra I and English I courses that will garner high school credits upon completion. Irish’s belief in herself and desire for a better future are the things that motivate her the most!  

Ms. Brittany Epps is a middle school English teacher at Martin Behrman Charter School where she has led students to greatness for the last three years. Brittany is a New Orleans native, Warren Easton alumni, and graduate of Howard University in Washington, DC. Upon completion, Brittany immediately returned to New Orleans, finding it imperative to help students in her hometown recognize their full potential. Brittany wishes for her students to witness and experiment with Language Arts in all of its forms, from structured and informative to unrestrained and creative. In her classroom, students immerse themselves in the beauty of the content and resurface as strong individuals, both academically and personally. Brittany recognizes her influence on the scholars in her care, so she seeks to give everything that she possibly can to reach them and water the garden of their minds. When she’s not in the classroom, Brittany enjoys traveling to new destinations and writing poetry.

Zeb Hollins:
Zeb Hollins III studied Speech/Theatre at Southern University and worked and studied with New York University’s Creative Arts Team as a Master Actor/Teacher for six years. While in New York, he performed in numerous productions at The Billie Holiday Theatre, The Negro Ensemble Company, and Woodie King’s New Federal Theatre. He conducted violence prevention and arts in education workshops in NYC public schools with The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, and The Leadership Program Inc. He has worked with several New Orleans arts organizations including The NOLA Project, Southern Rep, and Goat in the Road Productions.

Sobha Kavanakudiyil has a strong commitment to quality and accessible arts education. She is a faculty member in The Graduate Program in Educational Theatre at The City College of New York where she enjoys teaching and managing the Harlem Children’s Theatre Festival for the Harlem community.  Sobha has been the recipient of the Colin Powell Fellowship in Service Learning at City College. She is on the Board of Directors for the New York City Arts in Education Roundtable, the Association of Teaching Artists, National Programming Director for AATE, and President of the Board of Directors for Spellbound Theatre (NYC’s only theatre company dedicated to theatre for the very young). She has been a presenter at conferences including: Face to Face, AATE, APAP, NJEA Convention, and NYU Educational Theatre conferences to name a few.  She also enjoys working as an Arts Education Consultant for organizations such as Urban Arts Partnership, The Apollo Theater and and Center for Arts Education.  In addition, she has been a reviewer for the Brooklyn Arts Council and NYSCA (New York State Council in the Arts, and for the journal Arts Education Policy Review.  She has been a Teaching Artist for many places in and around New York City including: The New Victory Theater, The Educational Arts Team in Jersey City and Lifetime Arts.
