Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre (CBRT) is among the simplest ways to implement an arts integration teaching strategy. CBRT uses the art form of readers theatre—a style of theatre in which the actors do not memorize their lines. Rather, they sit or stand and read through the script together.

CBRT combines traditional Readers Theatre with creative writing to increase students’ reading fluency, comprehension, and retention of information in any content area—English language arts, foreign language, social studies, or even math and science.

Rosalind Flynn, Head of the M.A. in Theatre Education at The Catholic University of America and a national Kennedy Center Teaching Artist, leads this online course based on her book Dramatizing the Content With Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre. 

This course’s activities involve teachers and teaching artists in the introducing, planning, writing, rehearsing, staging, and assessing of CBRT scripts.

The three online sessions feature a multitude of slides containing photos, graphics, book page numbers referenced, and examples of CBRT in action. Videos are also an integral part of the online presentations. Participants witness demonstrations of aspects of CBRT in action in classrooms.

Participants in the synchronous ("real time,” live) sessions will interact with the presenter—respond to and pose questions, offer comments and ideas, and influence the delivery of instruction.

Asynchronous participants will be able to access the recordings of the online sessions and experience the instruction precisely as it occurred. (Note: Participants who register for the synchronous experience will also be able to access the recordings.)

Dr. Flynn’s book Dramatizing the Content With Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre serves as the print material for this course. Participants purchase a discounted copy (Cost is approximately $15) to use during and between the online sessions.

Enrollment Limits:

 For the synchronous course (meaning that you sign on and attend the session in real time): 22 participants

 For the asynchronous course (meaning that you access the course session recording anytime within the 2 weeks following the synchronous event): Unlimited number of participants
