Reporting to the AATE president and Board of Directors, the Executive Director manages the operation and development of the organization to ensure AATE achieves its strategic goals and advances its mission. S/he provides leadership in advocacy, fundraising and financial management; delivery of programs and services; conference/event management; long-range planning; outreach; board relations; and the daily administration of the AATE national office located in Bethesda, MD just outside Washington, DC.

This exempt position requires proven leadership, operations, relationship management and administrative skills. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with a Board of Directors and AATE’s diverse membership and partnerships. The position requires commitment to the mission, programs and goals of AATE; relevant experience in and knowledge of matters relating to theatre & education, theatre for young audiences and/or arts education are preferred but not required; a demonstrated success in nonprofit leadership positions is essential.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated success in arts administration and/or nonprofit leadership positions preferably with member-based organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising, effective relationship management, and membership development.
  • Direct experience working with boards, advisors, and donors, and working with audiences served by AATE.
  • Proven experience in event management, program management, marketing, publications and communications, including relevant technologies, ASM and ESP programs.
  • Established record of administrative, financial management and strategic planning experience.
  • Commitment to the mission, programs and goals of the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE)
  • Direct experience hiring and supervising staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years progressively responsible management experience in a nonprofit or member-based organization.
