OVERVIEW
March has been officially designated Theatre In Our Schools (TIOS) Month by the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE) and has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a time for advocating for and celebrating the great benefits of theatre education for youth development. The purpose of TIOS is to raise awareness of theatre education's power not only to raise SAT scores, reading comprehension, and academic achievement, but also to stimulate innovation and creativity among students, the very foundation of America's rise to greatness. This is also a time to remind our country’s citizens that all students should have access to quality theatre education in their lives. Throughout the month of March, AATE provides resources for advocates to spread the word about Theatre In Our Schools in March. In addition, since many states provide little or no formal certification and training for theatre educators, AATE offers resources and professional development for theatre educators and teachers of all subjects to use theatre techniques in their classrooms. The celebration continues to grow each year, reaching more artists, educators, students, parents and theatre supporters.
