The work of an artist is to imagine a better world and to build the practices that can bring it to life. In this session, participants will explore how to create and maintain cultures of care in artistic spaces by pulling from their individual and community experiences.
With the belief that cultural problems demand cultural systems, For Youth Inquiry (FYI) designs participatory theater experiences to activate the creative potential of school, family, and healthcare systems and improve the wellbeing of youth. In this session, participants will learn For Youth Inquiry's (FYI) specific brand of participatory theater design, theory, and praxis.
The Stories That Hold Us Back: “Nuts and Bolts” Praxis Narratives that Sabotage Career Development Opportunities for Teaching Artists with Gus J. Weltsek and Emilio G. Robles
In this interactive session, with Gus J. Weltsek, Associate Professor of Theatre Education (IU-Bloomington) and Emilio G. Robles, Assistant Professor of Applied Theatre (IU-Indianapolis), participants will be invited to examine narratives pertaining to the "behind the scenes nuts and bolts” of life as a teaching artist, that are often over-looked, “stifle us”, limit opportunities to “do the work”, and/or impede our development as professionals. Whether connected to articulating ideologies and pedagogies, questioning career readiness and professional development, informing work and selection of community partnerships, or finding authentic means of assessment and impact, (among other things), participants will engage in a facilitated deep-dive into stories we tell ourselves or “that hold us back”. What have we bought into or co-signed on knowingly or unknowingly? How can we re-envision and reconstruct a sample narrative to ensure that opportunity meets preparedness for better outcomes? Join us in generating, sharing, challenging, reconstructing, revisioning, and embodying!
